How do I message a client inside a project?

The short version

Each hub has its own Message Center and a forwarding address. Compose from the hub to email a client, and forward outside email threads to the hub's address to pull them in. Everything threads next to the project work.

Messaging in Visualist is organized by project. Each hub has its own Message Center, so client conversations live next to the moodboards, lookbooks, and notes for that project instead of scattered across your inbox. This article covers the two ways to keep a client conversation inside a hub.

Before you start

You need a hub for the project, and to send email from it you need a connected email account. See How do I create a hub? and How do I connect my email inbox to Visualist?.

Email a client from the hub

  1. Open the hub’s Message Center. Open the hub for the project, then open its Message Center.
  2. Compose your email. Click Compose, add the client as a recipient, and write your message. When the client replies, the reply threads back into this same hub.

Because the Message Center is scoped to the hub, the conversation stays with the project and is visible to the hub’s members.

Pull an existing thread into the hub

Every hub also has a forwarding address so you can bring in conversations that started elsewhere.

  1. Find the forwarding address. In the Message Center settings, look for the Forwarding address card. Its description reads “Forward external email threads to this address to add them to this hub’s Message Center.”
  2. Copy the address. Click Copy email address. The address looks like hub_<id>@visualist.email.
  3. Forward a thread in. From your regular email, forward an existing client thread to that address. It appears in the hub’s Message Center.
Good to know

The forwarding address accepts email from anyone, so you can ask a client or collaborator to send to it directly without them needing a Visualist account. Each hub has its own address, so forwarded mail always lands in the right project.
