How permissions change when you move or merge items?
How permissions change when you move or merge items?

When you move or merge folders, sub-folders, or files, permissions can change. Visualist applies cascading rules automatically, while still protecting direct invites and privacy settings.

Key rules for access and overrides

  • Cascade permissions: Items inherit access from their new hub or parent folder.
  • Overrides: File-level overrides (like Commenter access) persist. Folder-level overrides may reset if merged.
  • Direct invites: Always persist — even if the user isn’t in the new hub.
  • Guests: Moving an item outside a hub removes all guest access.

Examples of how access changes

  • Moving a file with a direct invite: Invite stays valid even in a new hub.
  • Moving a folder into another hub: Old hub members lose access, but new hub members gain it.
  • Merging two sub-folders: Surviving folder’s permissions dominate, but file-level overrides persist.

Common questions about permissions

  • What if someone loses access after a move? They’re notified automatically. You can re-invite them if needed.
  • Do private items stay private? Yes — they follow the owner, even if the folder moves.
  • Can I preview changes before confirming? Yes, the confirmation dialog explains what will happen.
