Why your read/unread status may look different from Gmail
Why your read/unread status may look different from Gmail

Overview

When you connect your email to Visualist, all messages related to the hub will sync here. You might notice that emails you’ve already read in Gmail still appear as unread in Visualist. This is intentional.

Visualist treats your hub as the system of record for each project, which means read/unread status is managed inside the hub separately from Gmail.

How it works

  • In Gmail: Read/unread reflects your personal inbox.
  • In Visualist: Read/unread shows whether you (or your team) have opened the message inside the hub.
  • Emails will stay unread in Visualist until you view them here, even if you’ve already opened them in Gmail.
  • This helps ensure nothing slips through when working with clients or collaborators.

Why this is better for projects

  • Keeps the hub as a complete record of project communication.
  • Helps teams know what’s been reviewed inside Visualist, not just in someone’s personal inbox.
  • Prevents important messages from being overlooked.

Common questions

Q: If I read an email in Gmail, why does Visualist still show it as unread?

A: Because Visualist tracks read status independently. This ensures you always review messages in the hub where your project lives.

Q: If I disconnect my email, will my messages disappear?

A: No. Existing messages remain in the hub, with their current read/unread status. New replies will stop syncing until you reconnect.

Q: Can I make Gmail and Visualist read/unread match?

A: Not right now. Visualist is designed to prioritize project consistency over inbox mirroring.

Pro tip

Use the “Mark all as read” option in the hub if you’ve already caught up on messages elsewhere and want to reset your hub inbox quickly.
